A café in the heart of Gosforth, providing work placements to young people with disabilities and serving some of the best food and drink Newcastle has to offer.
About The Café
We provide essential work experience placements at our Café Beam in Gosforth – a beautiful café/bistro which is run by a team of young people with a variety of disabilities and learning difficulties.
These youngsters help to prepare all of the produce, serve customers, operate tills and handle money as well as welcoming many different members of the community both volunteers and customers.
Café Beam is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys delicious, home-cooked food and hot drinks, cakes and amazing service, as provided by our wonderful young people. We also love our doggy customers, so please feel free to bring your four-legged friends!
Using quality, local produce including Acorn Dairy and Northumberland Eggs, our team produce fantastic breakfasts, brunches, lunches, afternoon teas and sweet delights. Our menus, which are updated seasonally by our head chef and prepared in our 5/5 Food Hygiene-rated kitchen, are guaranteed to tantalise your taste buds whatever your preferences and dietary requirements.

We provide work placements to young people with learning difficulties or disabilities, where they can develop essential work and life skills at our Gosforth-based Café Beam.
The students, aged 16+ and based in the North East, work shifts in the professional café, allowing them to grow confidence and skills, helping them to make transition into paid employment and enhancing their life skills as they move into adulthood.
The young people attend their placement once a week and take part in all elements of running a café including welcoming and serving customers, taking orders, handling money, preparing food and drinks, clearing tables and washing up, as well being responsible for the general hygiene and cleanliness of the café.
The young people are mentored throughout their placement by dedicated volunteers who provide hands-on support and encouragement. The mentor demonstrates tasks, giving praise where possible and providing clear instructions with a view to the young people becoming as independent as possible in the café.
Our volunteers must be age 18+ and would usually help one morning or one afternoon on a weekly basis, though we always need mentors on an ad-hoc basis, too.
It is important that the volunteer can build excellent formative relationships with the young people. Volunteers should be friendly, approachable, patient, flexible and adapt to working in both busy and quiet periods.
Including Café and kitchen, and activity room. Why not hire our gorgeous Café Beam premises for an intimate gathering. Whether it is a family party, girly afternoon tea or birthday event we can cater for your needs. Perfectly located in the heart of Gosforth, we can seat up to 35 people and tailor the event to your specific requirements.
We also love to get out and about into the community. Before lockdown, we had a weekly pop-up café, Lew’s Place, which was established at Newburn Leisure Centre by our own Lewis Codling. It offered a wide range of baked goods, delicious drinks and fresh paninis.
We would be delighted to bring our pop-up café to your workplace, community group or school/college. Call 0191 284 4166 for more information.
